There are at least seven types of herpes viruses. Herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) causes cold sores and genital herpes. Licorice root inhibits both the growth and cell damaging effects of herpes simplex. If you are using licorice, increase your potassium intake. Warning: Do not use this herb on a daily basis for more than seven days in a row. Avoid it completely if you have high-blood pressure.
