Renewing A Pasport For A Child – Success Is Within The Details
Posted by on December 26, 2011
Well, renewing a U.S. online passport for a child has special considerations. Because youth under age sixteen must apply in person with their parents or guardians, the process is very detailed. But you can succeed if you keep the rules in mind and follow government instructions.
Minor Travel
Travel documentation for minors is mandatory when they will leave the United States by air. Each child must have his or her own identification. Traveling into the United States is a bit easier, as formal birth certificates are accepted in some cases. Visas may also be necessary. Generally speaking, the renewal process is best started long before travel begins. In most cases, starting 6 months ahead is a good idea.
Families
Parents must take their children in person to a designated acceptance facility or agency to apply. Upon arrival, Form DS-11: Application for a U. S. Passport must be completed and signed in view of an Acceptance Agent. This form is absolutely required, but it cannot be filled out or signed in advance because to do so will disqualify it. Parents should be ready to give the agent their Social Security numbers. There are different application forms for lost US online passport.
DS-11
Find your closest designated application facility by asking at your local post office. Many are authorized to work on behalf of the Department of State to do this work. Other places include public libraries and city, county or state government offices.
DS-82
The need for unexpected travel is best handled by going directly to a regional agency. If you are already abroad, then make an appointment at the closest United States Embassy or Consulate. There will be no charge for this appointment, but plan on paying an Expedite Fee. You must give a paper copy of your travel itinerary. You must submit Form DS-82, and you must do it in person with any children traveling with you.
Pictures
Each applicant must have their own photo. It must be in color, two inches by two inches in size, and current within 6 months or less. This is because children change in appearance very quickly as they age. Though you can take the picture yourself in a pinch, it is a better idea to have a professional do it. They know all the legalities involved, and having a poor photo may cause your application to be denied.
Alerts
Parental child abduction has become an international issue. The United States has created a Passport Issuance Alert Program for children as a tool to help prevent abductions. For parents with children under the age of 18, it is possible to register with the agency so that an alert may be provided to either parent when international travel is planned. The legal, psychological and emotional problems that are caused when abduction occurs can be significant.
