Excerpts from a powerful documentary produced by WCOT in Tallahassee, FL detailing the dangers of drinking and driving. The program follows the story of Eric Smallridge, a young Tallahassee man who is currently serving a 22-year sentence for the death of two young women in a car accident when he was driving under the influence. The piece looks at the story from all angles, talking to Eric, his parents and the families of the victims showing how many lives were shattered in an instant, with the decision to drink and drive.

Today Mrs. Napier came to my school Alonso.During her entire presentation the entire class was silent and even the kids who are usually disrespectful when a presenter is there were very attentive. After she finished everyone seemed to be truly upset about what happened and this definitely had an impact. The entire class left silently for what had to be the first time. I will never forget this.

Mrs.Napier came to NAS pensacola and gave her speech to the whole command. What was a bigger shocker is that she actually brought Eric Smallbridge to speak as well, it was a very eye opening and touching experience. Your a tough mom Mrs, Napier, Godbless

@MasterDonny1 You have to goto court, its not just pay by mail like a speed ticket. If you are convicted you will be placed on probation and with conditions such as paying the fine, community service, supervision fees, substance abuse counciling and on and on.You will be responsible to pay for all these or your probation officer will violate your probation and you WILL go to jail. The tickit will stay on your record for 99 yr in FL.Fortunately most ins comp only look back 5.Just pay and get through it

If you have an outstanding ticket for drunk driving, how long does it stay on your driving record if you never pay it?

@blazinNAKEDBEERz to hell w/ you and the ignorant fools who think it’s their “freedom” to risk lives, they’re the reason our generation is screwed. You need to realize you aren’t just chancing a DUI, but risk innocent lives and if you’re to selfish to care about that, your own. I lost my 19 year old twin brother & bestfriend in a drunk driving accident under a year ago and it will never be okay to loose two 19 year olds to an avoidable death, their lives are more precious than your “freedom”.

If the city and law officials are really concerned about public safety and alcohol related car accidents then why does the public transportation shut down before the bars close on weekends in major cities? The system in place seems to have as much or more emphasis on generating money for the city and state as it does for keeping the roads safe.

At least this man has the guts to be accountable for himself. He doesn’t say “the devil made me do it” .. or “I’m born again and now I’m absolved” .. he came on camera .. he even dissolved his personality into “Inmate P22679″ who “used to be Eric Smallridge”. Hopefully prison doesn’t turn him into an awful person and he may help us all make this planet a better world after his release.

@dupontproject This is true .. but it also depends on some other factors. I think in every given moment we have the ability to distance ourselves from the sensation we’re feeling. Drunk or not .. from moment to moment .. we can think solely of ourselves .. or to think of something else around us .. whether it be the stars up in the sky .. or some strange insect in the night .. Let’s be fair .. some of this pure luck .. we’ve all been stupid. Let’s just try to be better. God bless.

@bryarp Ummmm .. so … how exactly did it change you? .. Your main vid is a FPS game of you killing insurgents.

@lehcsh8609 What you’re saying is true … but in any given moment we have the ability .. completely shit-faced or not to think solely of ourselves and our own emotions .. or to have compassion for some little creature around us .. whether it be a nearby human being, a dog, cat or or just a little bug. Alcohol can induce us into an altered state. But it’s up to us if we let it subvert our humanity.

@olivastac21 You are asking 16-17 yo’s to use their judgment? .. c’mon .. that ain’t gonna work. I can vividly remember being 16 at the rival football game and driving home with two hotties in my lap. I had sneaked in a bottle of Bacardi in my underwear. I know you cops wanna get home to your wives and mistresses, but it’s AFTER the game that you have to become cops more than ever. (A job half-done is a job not done at all.)

Hey kids I have been a DUI COP In Colorado for the last 6 years and I arrest about three DUI drivers every night i work. Please call someone if you drink too much or stay where you are for the night. Call a cab it is only going to be $50 and the life you save could be one of your friends or a family member. Remember DUI is not an accident it is a choice.

They came to my school today. And Eric was with them, first time he was able to talk about it to any school. Broke my heart when they played the end music video. He was crying, Napier was crying. Everyone was crying. I felt really good though, that Eric was able to come and talk to us about it.

Mrs. Napier came to my school last week, and I felt like crying when she told the story. She showed pictures of the car(and had the car towed to my school, but one of the pictures shook me more) one of them had a sheet in the car and a foot was limply sticking out of it.
Mrs. Napier is strong, she didn’t cry once while she was telling us the story and she forgave Eric Smallridge, which is a hard thing to do.
The story touched me so much.
